Preparing for Laser Hair Removal – Part Two

The Day of Treatment

When patients arrive for their laser hair removal appointment, they will ideally be shaved and clean. Patients must skip their standard applications of lotion, makeup, perfume and deodorant on the day of treatment. Any substances on the skin’s surface during treatment can refract the laser’s energy and interfere with the laser’s effectiveness.

For patients who have a low pain tolerance, or who are especially concerned about experiencing discomfort, they can take a mild oral painkiller like Tylenol 15-20 minutes before their laser treatment.

Post Laser Hair Removal Treatment

After the laser hair removal session is over, patients will likely notice that their skin appears red and somewhat irritated from the treatment. This is completely normal, and the best thing patients can do at this time is to keep their skin well hydrated, protected from the sun and free from excess irritation. Your doctor can recommend post-laser lotions that can help minimize redness and sensitivity for patients who desire it.

By following these basic guidelines for laser-treated skin, patients should be able to resume daily activities immediately following their hair removal treatment. The tone and feel of the treated skin should be back to normal within 1-2 days.

Laser hair removal requires multiple treatments, usually 4-8 sessions needed to get permanent results. Treatments are usually spaced about 4-6 weeks apart. This means that it could take many months to go through a full series of treatments and reach desired results.
